As artificial intelligence reshapes healthcare delivery, dental professionals face fundamental questions: How do we maintain the trust our patients place in us? Can AI enhance rather than diminish compassionate care?

This RCDC webinar brings together three perspectives on these critical questions.

Dr. Thomas Nguyen opens by examining trust in AI adoption, exploring how dental professionals perceive, develop, and recalibrate their trust in AI tools. These findings will highlight the critical role that trust plays in the effective adoption and use of AI in clinical practice.

Professor Abdi Aidid of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law follows with insights on AI ethics in high-stakes applications, drawing parallels between healthcare and legal contexts where algorithmic decision-making carries profound consequences.

Dr. Peter Fritz concludes by demonstrating practical applications of AI for compassionate care, sharing the tools he uses daily in clinical practice to solve problems while keeping patients at the centre.

Together, these perspectives offer dental professionals a framework for navigating AI adoption that honours our profession’s core commitment to trustworthy, compassionate patient care.

This presentation will explore complex prosthodontic rehabilitation in medically and surgically challenging patients, highlighting the critical role of patient-centred, interdisciplinary care. Through case-based discussions, we will examine rehabilitation following head and neck cancer treatment and the management of large alveolar defects, focusing on conservative strategies, surgical–prosthodontic coordination, and implant-supported solutions. Together, these sessions emphasize not only on the restoration of function and esthetics, but also the importance of psychosocial well-being, dignity, and long-term quality of life in complex clinical care.

Dr. Vijay ReesuChallenges in Rehabilitation of Large Alveolar Defects.

Alveolar defects can arise from congenital conditions, traumatic injuries, surgical interventions (especially after cancer resections), or diseases. The rehabilitation of these defects presents challenges on both the surgical and prosthodontic fronts. Careful management and an integrated approach involving interdisciplinary care to restore both functional and esthetic outcomes for the patient are needed. The Maxillofacial prosthodontist contributes to all facets of patient care, from diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitation. Surgical intervention in maxillofacial cases can cause loss of teeth, loss of hard and soft tissues and result in significantly altered anatomy. Prosthodontic rehabilitation for such patients can be challenging, requiring pre-surgical planning at a time-sensitive point in the patient rehabilitation process. Particularly for young patients, a planned surgical reconstruction of missing soft and bony tissues, in combination with prosthetic restoration of missing teeth may be desirable. However, if surgical reconstructions are not properly planned and executed, irresolvable prosthetic difficulties may arise from poorly contoured, bulky tissues or a lack of suitable bone volume for the placement of implants.

We present a case that demonstrates the challenges in the rehabilitation process of maxillofacial defects. Prosthodontic rehabilitation involved restoration of the defects with implant supported prosthesis. The unpredictable nature of the defects and the uncertainty of recurrence have made the job of the prosthodontist more challenging.

Dr. Bruna Vallerini Prosthodontics Care Guided by Psychosocial Needs in a Medically Complex Patient with Head and Neck Cancer.

Prosthodontics rehabilitation plays a critical role in the care of patients treated for advanced head and neck cancer, where oral function, biological risk, and quality of life are closely interconnected. This session highlights common oral sequelae associated with radiotherapy and reviews conservative, minimally invasive prosthodontic strategies suited to medically complex and high-risk situations. Through a case-based perspective, the discussion emphasizes the importance of patient-centred decision-making and illustrates how treatment planning can extend beyond functional restoration to support dignity, self-confidence, and psychosocial well-being, particularly in the context of disease recurrence.

Dr. Vinay BhideThe Collaborative Approach for Preventing Peri-implantitis: A Restorative and Periodontal Synergy.

This lecture will explore the critical synergy between the implant surgeon and the restorative dentist in preventing peri-implantitis. We will scrutinize how certain prosthetic and restorative factors, often overlooked, are critical contributors to this inflammatory process. The presentation will emphasize a collaborative, team-oriented, and evidence-based approach to treatment planning from the outset.  By understanding these collaborative touchpoints, practitioners can minimize biological complications and ensure long-term implant success. The goal is to shift the paradigm from reactive management to a preventative, collaborative model, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Camila Pacheco-PereiraIncidental Findings in Dental Imaging: A Call for Cross-Specialty Vigilance.

As dental imaging becomes central to specialty care, we must recognize the powerful – and often underused – potential of our radiographs. This presentation highlights the critical, yet frequently overlooked, role of dental professionals in identifying incidental findings, including those that extend beyond the area of interest and oral health. Panoramic radiographs and CBCTs routinely reveal red flags with possible systemic implications – findings that may require timely action or referral. Join Dr. Pacheco-Pereira to explore how we, as dentists, can take the lead in early detection, proactive referrals, and collaborative care. It’s time we start seeing the whole picture.
