Dr. Sylvain ChamberlandConsideration of Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE) and Mandibular Symphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (MSDO) for the Treatment of Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Patients who are predisposed to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often have upper airway obstruction in the nasopharynx or the oropharynx. Mandibular advancement and tongue-restraining devices are usually effective options for the management of OSA in selected patients. However, positive airway pressure therapy is considered the gold standard treatment for the management of OSA in adults. Maxillomandibular advancement surgery is an effective surgical technique for treatment of moderate to severe OSA. The role of the transverse maxillomandibular dimension (TMMD) in OSA is not fully understood, but recent reports appear to confirm that normalizing TMMD may assist in the treatment of OSA. With the help of two case reports, this manuscript reviews the mechanics used to change TMMD. These cases illustrate that patients may benefit from just increasing the TMMD alone, or both TMMD and anteroposterior measurements, if they experience snoring and OSA. TMMD followed by bimaxillary advancement, when indicated, might be more effective than maxillomandibular advancement alone.

Dr. Ben PliskaAirway Imaging and Obstructive Sleep Apnea – More than just a pretty picture?

The orthodontic profession has become well aware of the health implications of obstructive sleep apnea, however the role that airway imaging can play in disease management is less well understood. This presentation will review and highlight the relationship between upper airway anatomy and function, as well as discuss the limitations of current CBCT imaging as a quantitative tool in airway assessment.

Dr. Vinay BhideRoot Coverage Procedures – What Does the Evidence Really Tell Us?

Perhaps no other subject has been more popular in the discipline of periodontology over the past two decades  than periodontal plastic surgery. Indeed, surgical correction of gingival recession and other mucogingival deformities around natural teeth has been shown to be a predictable therapeutic modality. However, we cannot always apply the same technique in all areas of the mouth and expect consistent outcomes, as each region has its own nuances. This presentation will critically evaluate the evidence with respect to root coverage outcomes and demonstrate why a site specific approach for treating gingival recession must be considered.

Dr. Jim LaiShould Dental Implant Therapy be Biologically-Guided?

Dental implant therapy has been successful in the rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients who are missing teeth.  An interdisciplinary approach is critical to long term success. This webinar will explore two biological concepts that clinicians need to consider for implant therapy. The first concept is the biological principle of ensuring maximum conservation of teeth and maximum preservation of the alveolar bone. The second concept is to understand the long-term biological consequences of implant therapy. These biological concepts will impact and guide the implant treatment planning process. There needs to be a balance between these biological concepts with mechanically based, prosthetically driven principles for implant therapy.

Dr. Sheldon Best presenting on the Outcome Assessments of teeth with Necrotic Pulps and Apical Periodontitis Treated with Long-term Calcium Hydroxide (Best, Tawil et al, JOE January 2021).

Description: Sheldon will discuss aspects of this paper with emphasis on considerations for maximizing endodontic outcomes.

Dr. Manor Haas presenting on the Endo by GPs and/or Endodontists: Why, When and How.

Description: Dentistry has always been meant to be a team effort amongst practitioners.
Recent advances in endodontic armamentaria have made it easier for general dentists to provide endodontic treatments. However, by means of clinical scenarios, this program will demonstrate the not so obvious separation in patient care between general dentists and endodontic specialists.

You are invited to attend RCDC’s upcoming webinar on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 8 pm EDT. In this webinar, we are welcoming Dr. Jennifer MacLellan to present on the relationship between early childhood caries and oral health-related quality of life and Dr. Raymond Lee to speak about COVID-19 and its affects on the pediatric patient’s general health and dental condition; especially those with comorbidities and special needs.

Dr. Jennifer MacLellan presenting on The Relationship Between Early Childhood Caries and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life.

Description: It has been well documented that Early Childhood Caries is the most common chronic disease experienced by children in our society. The consequences of ECC are broad-reaching and the literature has demonstrated significant negative effects on oral health-related quality of life for both children and their caregivers. Those effects together with barriers to care including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will be discussed.

Dr. MacLellan has graciously agreed to share her presentation with the RCDC members. Please email membership@rcdc.ca to request your copy.

Dr. Raymond Lee presenting on CoVid-19 and its affects on the pediatric patient’s general health and dental condition; especially those with comorbidities and special needs.

Description: The CoVid-19 pandemic has affected everyone directly and indirectly. And because the virus has happened so quickly, its effects are not well documented. With the few studies that have been published, and complimented with some anecdotal stories from a children’s hospital, our Pediatric Dentistry patients may be in much more difficulty and distress than we are aware; with respect to dental disease, access to dental care, and simply, their quality of life. With the advent of multiple vaccines, we believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. However, the light is probably still very small and we can only hope that it will get bigger soon. In the meantime, we all try to make our patients better with the limited resources that we have.

You are invited to attend RCDC’s upcoming webinar, which is offered complimentary to all Fellows and Members. In this webinar, we are welcoming Dr. Sonica Singhal to present on AGPs in Dentistry and Dr. Carlos Quiñonez to speak about Dentistry in a post-COVID-19 era.

Dr. Sonica Singhal presenting on AGPs in dentistry: the risk of infection transmission and its mitigation

During COVID-19, aerosol generation in dentistry has been quite a challenge in delivering safe dental care. For this session, we will review the updated evidence on dental specific practices (e.g., dental dams, high volume evacuation) in decreasing the production of aerosols and reducing transmission.

Dr. Carlos Quiñonez presenting on Dentistry in a post-COVID-19 era

The delivery of dental care has been radically altered as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This session will review some of the major clinical and policy changes that have occurred or are likely to develop in dentistry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
