Dr. Igor Pesun – Craniofacial Differences: Management of Premature Infants to Seniors

The prosthetic management of patients with craniofacial differences requires a team of specialists working together to provide the patient with the desired functional, biological and esthetic outcomes. Due to the multiple etiologies of anomalies, patients with craniofacial differences present complex situations requiring Prosthodontists to work with a team of specialists. To be able to treat these patients, basic prosthodontic principles need to be applied, all the while breaking the rules and thinking outside the box. This presentation will look at the management of patients with craniofacial differences from premature infants to seniors.

Dr. Sheri McKinstry – Reconciliation in Dentistry from an Indigenous Perspective

In 2008, the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, made a Statement of Apology to former students of Indian Residential Schools on behalf of the Government of Canada. He apologized for the Indian Residential Schools that separated over 150,000 Aboriginal children from their families, traditions and cultures, to assimilate them into the dominant culture. In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) released the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada that heard from more than 6,000 witnesses, revealing that children were abused, not only physically and sexually, but also mentally and spiritually, and they died in the schools in numbers that would not have been tolerated in any school system anywhere in the country, or in the world. This session will help introduce what is reconciliation, why it is important, and what role the Canadian dental community plays in the Indigenous Canadian social justice discourse.

Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to recognize and regulate one’s own emotions as well as understanding the effect that our emotions have on those around us.  People with high emotional intelligence use this information to guide thinking and behaviour to adjust their emotions and adapt to the environment. Unfortunately, unlike our colleagues in business, we are not taught this in our education. In this overview, we will see how becoming mindful of our emotions can have a profound impact in our personal and professional lives.

Dr. Oliver Pin-Harry – One More Thing about Maxillary Incisors

Maxillary incisor implants present the combined esthetic- restorative – surgical challenges and risks in one package. This is particularly remarkable when considering immediate implantation and provisionalization in fresh extraction sockets. This presentation will demonstrate that the so-called ideal sagittal angulation to allow a screw-retained crown is often not possible when an immediate implantation protocol is chosen. Clinical cases will illustrate how the clinician can safely deviate from the “ideal” when necessary, without compromising the esthetic and functional outcome.

Dr. Charlene Solomon – Obstructive Sleep Apnea – A Prosthodontic Perspective

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep breathing disorder characterized by repeated upper airway disruptive events during sleep with often associated daytime sleepiness. There is a growing awareness of OSA, the effects of OSA and its associated comorbidities. Prosthodontics encompasses the diagnostics and management of dental wear, temporomandibular disorders, and sleep bruxism; with some entities having a potential common thread with OSA; either by association with or as a potential indicator of possible OSA. This presentation provides a global prosthodontic perspective on the screening, identification and management of OSA.

Dr. Sylvain Chamberland – Consideration of Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE) and Mandibular Symphyseal Distraction Osteogenesis (MSDO) for the Treatment of Sleep Apnea and Snoring 

Patients who are predisposed to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often have upper airway obstruction in the nasopharynx or the oropharynx. Mandibular advancement and tongue-restraining devices are usually effective options for the management of OSA in selected patients. However, positive airway pressure therapy is considered the gold standard treatment for the management of OSA in adults. Maxillomandibular advancement surgery is an effective surgical technique for treatment of moderate to severe OSA. The role of the transverse maxillomandibular dimension (TMMD) in OSA is not fully understood, but recent reports appear to confirm that normalizing TMMD may assist in the treatment of OSA. With the help of two case reports, this manuscript reviews the mechanics used to change TMMD. These cases illustrate that patients may benefit from just increasing the TMMD alone, or both TMMD and anteroposterior measurements, if they experience snoring and OSA. TMMD followed by bimaxillary advancement, when indicated, might be more effective than maxillomandibular advancement alone.

Dr. Ben Pliska – Airway Imaging and Obstructive Sleep Apnea – More than just a pretty picture?

The orthodontic profession has become well aware of the health implications of obstructive sleep apnea, however the role that airway imaging can play in disease management is less well understood. This presentation will review and highlight the relationship between upper airway anatomy and function, as well as discuss the limitations of current CBCT imaging as a quantitative tool in airway assessment.
