Dr. Dane McMillanProsthetic and Surgical Reconstruction After Trauma: From Dentoalveolar to Craniomaxillofacial.

Facial trauma is a prevalent concern encountered by all dental professionals. However, each patient presents a unique set of circumstances, necessitating tailored treatment approaches. This presentation will explore both prosthodontics and surgical reconstructive options, emphasizing the importance of individualized treatment plans with custom devices and prosthetics for managing craniomaxillofacial trauma.

Leaning Objective:

To explore the treatment of dentoalveolar and craniomaxillofacial trauma utilizing implant-specific prosthetics and devices.

Dr. Kale McMillan – Surgical Considerations of Mandibular Reconstruction in Malignant Pathology.

Ablative surgery for malignant pathology often leaves patients aesthetically and functionally debilitated. Surgical reconstruction using free tissue transfers offers multiple reconstructive benefits to these patients, including minimizing time to prosthetic rehabilitation. This presentation will discuss the surgical considerations in planning free tissue transfers prior to implant supported prosthetic rehabilitation.

Learning Objective:

To discuss the various surgical and prosthetic methods of reconstructing mandibular defects after pathologic ablative surgery.

Dr. Heather J. Conrad – The Impact of Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation on OHRQoL and HRQL for Patients with Oral Cancer.

Maxillofacial Prosthodontics is the branch of prosthodontics that involves the rehabilitation of patients with defects or disabilities that were present when born or developed due to disease or trauma. Healthcare outcomes are shifting from achieving traditional clinical endpoints to prioritizing the functional health and well-being of the patient. This presentation will evaluate the effect of prosthetic rehabilitation of maxillary or mandibular defects in the oral cancer patient on their OHRQoL and HRQL.

Learning Objective:

To appreciate how maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation can improve a patient’s oral health-related quality of life.

Recognizing the profound implications that artificial intelligence (AI) in dentistry will have on clinical practice, the training of dental specialists, and the expertise required to deliver the highest standard of oral health care to the public, in 2023, RCDC established a Task Force on AI and Emerging Digital Technology (RCDC AI Task Force). The RCDC AI Task Force has recruited several academic and clinical leaders from across Canada who are involved in specialty programs at universities as task force members.

In summer 2024, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) engaged in public consultations regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Dentistry. As part of this process, the RCDC AI Task Force developed a position paper, which was sent to the RCDSO and can be accessed here.

The Indigenous Dental Association of Canada (IDAC) is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new video project, coinciding with National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of oral health within Indigenous communities, showcase traditional knowledge, and celebrate the contributions of Indigenous dental professionals.

The video project: Joyce’s Tooth Tales – A Journey of Courage and Wisdom, features a series of insightful stories introducing a young girl who shares her oral health journey; from her first loose tooth and first cavity to becoming a dental specialist.

The content also delves into the unique challenges faced by Indigenous communities in accessing dental care and the innovative solutions to overcome these barriers.

We invite everyone to watch these compelling short video stories and join us in recognizing the vital role of oral health in the overall well-being of Indigenous communities.

The videos are available on the IDAC YouTube Channel.

We are pleased to welcome two graduate students from McGill University presenting on topics in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Hans ShihZygomatic Implant Perforated Flap.

Maxillectomy patients present a challenge for oral rehabilitation secondary to the loss of bone and soft tissue support. The changes in tissue contour leads to difficulties in retaining conventional prostheses including partial dentures and complete dentures. The addition of adjuvant radiation therapy compounds the problems secondary to decreases in salivary flow, which is normally an important element for retention of removable prostheses. The loss of bony support often precludes traditional implants placement. The zygomatic implant perforated flap was introduced into the field as an innovative technique to overcome these challenges. The talk will review zygomatic implants, the zygomatic implant perforated flap, followed by a case.

We are pleased to welcome three graduate students from University of Toronto presenting on topics in Endodontics.

Dr. Emily Bishop and Dr. Dani Stein-Meyerson – Exploring the Efficacy of Regenerative Endodontics – Case Presentations.

Regenerative endodontics has emerged as a promising field in endodontics, offering a novel approach to treat immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulp and open apices. These two case presentations outline the application of regenerative endodontic procedures in two patients presenting with a necrotic pulp and periapical lesion in mandibular premolars. These cases underline the potential of regenerative endodontics in promoting tissue regeneration and functional recovery in immature teeth with pulp necrosis, offering a conservative alternative to traditional root canal therapy.

Dr. Daniel Cho-Kee – Retrospective Analysis of Sodium Hypochlorite Accidents Characterized by CBCT and Survey: Identification of Risk Factors

To report the factors affecting the incidence and progress of SHAs using cone beam computed tomography scans and a modified survey. Twenty-four clinicians who experienced a SHA on an adult patient while undergoing endodontic treatment on a permanent mature tooth were recruited. All clinicians submitted anonymous patient information including age, sex, and small field CBCT scans but only nineteen sent the additional modified surveys which collected supplementary information on patient demographics, clinician technique, and SHA manifestation and management.

This webinar will be moderated by Dr. Bettina Basrani.
