We are pleased to welcome two graduate students from the University of Toronto presenting on topics in Prosthodontics.
Dr. Amit Singh Brar, BDS, MDS (Prosthodontics), MSc (Prosthodontics) Resident – Implant-Supported Overdentures: A Versatile Treatment Approach.
This presentation will explore implant-supported overdentures (ISODs) as a versatile solution for managing complex edentulous cases. By integrating clinical insights and evidence-based literature, the discussion will highlight how ISODs address anatomical, functional, financial, and medical constraints while optimizing prosthetic design, implant positioning, and attachment selection.
Key considerations will include space requirements, implant distribution strategies, palatal vs. palateless designs, and attachment system selection in relation to hygiene, comfort, and long-term maintenance. The presentation will also examine ISODs as a solution for implant failures and the conversion of fixed restorations into removable alternatives.
By demonstrating the predictability and adaptability of ISODs, this discussion will highlight their role in severe ridge resorption, failed fixed prostheses, and cases where ideal implant configurations are not possible due to patient-related factors.
This presentation provides a clinically relevant and evidence-supported perspective on ISODs in implant prosthodontics. Through case-based learning and literature integration, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to optimize ISODs as a predictable and adaptable treatment modality for edentulous patients with diverse challenges.
Learning Objectives
1. Demonstrate the Versatility of ISODs in Implant Rehabilitation.
- Explore how ISODs accommodate ridge resorption, implant failures, and patient-specific limitations.
2. Evaluate Implant Placement and Prosthetic Considerations in ISOD Design.
- Assess how implant positioning, support configurations, and attachment selection influence overdenture stability, hygiene, and function.
3. Integrate Evidence-Based Decision-Making into ISOD Treatment Planning.
- Review literature on ISOD outcomes, implant positioning strategies, and long-term maintenance, emphasizing patient-centred approaches for predictability and satisfaction.
Dr. Mohammad M. A. Al-Tamimi BDS, MSc – Restoring the Edentulous Maxilla: Fixed Restorations.
This presentation explores the fixed restorative options for the edentulous maxilla. It covers the importance of thorough diagnostic procedures and treatment planning, and details the various fixed prosthetic options available, such as implant-supported bridges and full-arch prostheses.
Surgical considerations, including sinus lift and ridge augmentation, are discussed alongside prosthetic design and material selection. The presentation concludes with data on patient outcomes, emphasizing the benefits of fixed restorations in improving function, aesthetics, and quality of life.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the Etiology of Tooth Loss and Diagnostic Processes for the Edentulous Maxilla.
- Evaluate Fixed Prosthetic Options and Surgical Techniques.
- Assess the Impact of Fixed Restorations on Patient Outcomes..

We are pleased to welcome two graduate students from the Université de Montréal presenting on topics in Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Yen-Chau Nguyen – Building Trust: Comprehensive Dental Care and Post-Trauma Recovery for a Patient with Autism.
This case involves the management of a dental traumatic injury on a 16-year-old patient with autism. Despite initial challenges with behaviour management, trust was established with consistent care and nitrous oxide sedation. We were able to achieve successful completion of procedures, such as reimplantation of an avulsed tooth, endodontic treatment, decoronation, and the placement of a fixed prosthetic appliance. Our objective was to respond to the functional and esthetic needs of the patient. The case emphasizes the importance of a patient and family-centred approach, clear communication with the family, and tailored strategies with flexibility for patients with special healthcare needs following a trauma.
Learning objectives:
- Discuss behaviour management strategies for success in neurodivergent patients.
- Discuss the importance of adaptable treatment plans to manage complications of trauma in patients with neurodivergence.
- Review the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and informed consent with patients and their families.
Dr. Wenjia Wu – Exploring Dental Treatment Options : X-linked Hypophosphatemia.
X-linked hypophosphatemia is a rare metabolic disorder that presents challenges in both medical and dental management, especially in the pediatric population. This presentation will review, through a case presentation, the medical and dental implications of the disease as well as discuss alternative treatment options for affected patients.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the pathophysiology of X-linked hypophosphatemia.
- Discuss and review the dental challenges of treating children with X-Linked Hypophosphatemia.
- Discuss and review dental treatment options for affected children.
